Single phase Direct online starter

Single phase Direct online starter (DOL) is a device consist of main contactor, protective devices and overload relay which is used for motor starting operations. It is used for low rating usually below 5HP motors.

direct online starter method of motor starting, the motor stator windings is directly connected to the main supply where the DOL protect the motor circuit from high inrush current which may damage the overall circuit as the initial current is much more higher than the full rated current.

Why do we need DOL starter?

At startup, the induction motor consumes a significant quantity of current. The motor windings may sustain damage from this beginning current. We employ many methods to lower the beginning current employing Motor Starters (such as star delta or DOL starters) in order to prevent any harm. The motor ratings and the load attached to the motor determine these methods. In addition, the motor starter guards against over-current and overloading.

NOTE

By connecting the motor directly to full power via an MCCB or circuit breaker and relays for overload protection, the Direct Online or DOL starter uses the full voltage or across the line starting technique. For this reason, induction motors rated under 5 horsepower are equipped with such a starting.

Below is how DOL connected

How to wire A single Phase motor

A single-phase induction motor is composed of a single-phase winding located on the  Stator and a cage windings on the rotor. When a single-phase power supply is applied to the stator winding, it generates a pulsating magnetic field. Due to inertia, the rotor remains stationary in this pulsating field. The structure of the single phase induction motor determines that the reverse rotation is generally completed by hardware.   Internal wiring structure of single-phase induction motor           Why there is a capacitor?   1.In the original setup, both the main coil and the auxiliary coil receive power simultaneously, creating equal electromagnetic forces that oppose each other, preventing the rotor from turning.  2 .  To make the magnetic field force rotate, it can be achieved by passing alternating currents of different phase sequencing the main coil and the auxiliary coil.
